The one-year anniversary of the Experiences Per Mile Advisory Council is approaching, and to commemorate the milestone, HARMAN has published three new episodes of the Experiences Per Mile podcast featuring members of the Advisory Council where they discuss their company's contribution to enhancing the end-to-end consumer experience for mobility. This blog post summarizes episode 12 of the EPM Podcast featuring Charity Rumery, Head of Automotive & Industrial Sales at HERE Technologies, one of the founding companies of the EPM Advisory Council. Listen to the full episode here.

The Experiences Per Mile Advisory Council is an independent organization founded by HARMAN and SBD Automotive in October 2019. It is comprised of 33 executive members from 22 companies and was formed to evaluate the changing automotive value chains, inspire cross-industry collaboration, and fuel meaningful consumer innovation. EPM Advisory Council members are advocates for Experiences Per Mile and have recently released a report that predicts consumer experience trends over the next 10 years. Like the many companies that make up the Advisory Council, HERE Technologies has a clear passion for creating positive customer experiences in the automotive and mobility industry, and safety and experience are at the core of this objective.

From a safety perspective, HERE leverages the sensor data from connected vehicles to enhance the driving experience with improved safety and added control. That means, once you connect the vehicle, you get seamless integration between the sensors onboard, high definition mapping and location technology to improve driver and passenger safety. For example, your vehicle could alert you to driving conditions ahead that are dangerous, like a hazard or a traffic backup, and suggest a different route.

From an experience perspective, it's a matter of making the most of our time in the vehicle. Based on recent data published by the U.S. Census Bureau and highlighted in the EPM 2030 report, American workers over 16 years old invested 225 hours last year—more than nine days—traveling to work and back each day. That's why now more than ever, it's important to optimize travel time and power the end user's experience in the vehicle.

With HERE's 30-year tenure in the automotive space, the company is focused on how to enable the richest feature set from an IVI and an off-board solution experience and enabling the future of automated driving with location technology. As a result, the HERE location platform standardizes the way HERE serves up its location, content and services to customers, putting the power in the customer's hands, so that they can create entirely new offers as well as leverage new technology enablers like 5G or the ability to monetize sensor data.

Digitalization isn't the only thing disrupting the mobility industry—it is being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in more ways than one. Charity has noticed increased usage of personal vehicles as people are taking social distancing into account. She's also noticing an increased desire for hands-free capabilities and changes in traffic patterns, of course.

Another change on the horizon is related to data usage. According to Charity, data is becoming a new fuel for the industry. Data can enable a level of higher safety and security for vehicles, with mapping, for example. The map itself provides critical components like location information and speed information to check if the vehicle is traveling at a safe speed, if the location is correct for this particular vehicle, and more.

Discussions about data often lead to discussions about data privacy. Charity shares that at HERE, privacy and consent management are paramount. The HERE platform serves as a hub for global data exchange and enrichment of car, vehicle data, and vehicle data sets. It natively provides neutral server capabilities in that capacity, which means that it offers the ability to safely and securely access and share car sensor data from multiple brands simultaneously while adhering to privacy regulations.
