HARMAN Digital Cockpit concept

The Smart Cluster supports full digitalization of the speedometer as well as fuel level and battery (hybrid/electric) gauges, meeting safety goals through functional hardware and software design. HARMAN combines In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) and cluster functionality on a single display to enhance the driving experience.

This integration also saves on cost and weight. Although the Smart Cluster is a standalone technology based on an independent operating system (RTLinux), in combination with the HARMAN Entry and Mid/High cockpit solutions, it fits perfectly into the overall in-vehicle experience.

The hypervisor is used as an abstraction layer for each HW/SW platform configuration. Each SW platform is available on respective reference hardware. Each HW platform already has an A- or B-Sample available for rapid automaker prototyping and vehicle integration. Different combinations of cluster and IVI on a given reference hardware allow the automaker to differentiate across markets, brands and models.

Fully connected for full safety

While the Digital Cockpit delivers new in-car experiences, continued automotive safety is a priority. HARMAN enables this by using RTLinux as a separate Digital Cluster operating system. a separate infotainment OS can deliver entertainment, while guaranteeing full reliability of safety features. The type-1 hypervisor allows these two operating systems to run on a single hardware platform. This solution facilitates sharing of hardware resources such as the rear-view camera or the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system across all ECUs.

Android & Linux

The cockpit is becoming more connected as it transitions to a new interface between the car and the driver’s digital content. In order to provide the best and most intuitive experience for the driver, there is a need for an additional operating system for infotainment. The safety-relevant car functions are governed by a separate cluster OS, while the HARMAN type-1 hypervisor manages the interaction.

To handle all the relevant data and make them valuable to the driver, the cockpit must be considered a self-contained device, with the same demands as a smartphone or personal computer. To guarantee an optimal digital user experience for the driver, HARMAN selects best-in-class IVI operating systems for its Digital Cockpit lines, Linux™ and Android™:
